Fifteen-year-old content creator Anti Abiba has broken down in tears while recounting how her family lost her brother after they could no longer afford to continue his hospital treatment.
In an emotional account shared online, the teenager said her brother d+ied 48 hours after they brought him home from the hospital because the family had run out of money to pay for his treatment.
She explained that the family borrowed money, exhausted their life savings and did everything possible to save him, but eventually could no longer afford to keep him in the hospital.
“We had to take him home and now he's gone. So tell me, what happened? What is the value of human life in this country?” she said.
Anti Abiba lamented that access to life-saving healthcare in Nigeria increasingly depends on a person's financial circumstances, arguing that people from low-income families are often left without the means to continue treatment when their money runs out.
“I've come to realise that Nigeria is becoming a place where your chance of survival depends on how much money you have. You are poor. Even your right to fight for your life becomes a privilege,” she said.
The content creator also expressed concern over families who incur debts while trying to save their loved ones, only to lose them when they can no longer afford medical care.
She questioned why the plight of struggling families receives limited attention while political discussions increasingly focus on the next election.
“Who will speak for the African Nigerians? Who will care about the family who can't afford to keep their loved ones alive?” she asked.
Anti Abiba said the situation reflected a serious problem in the country, urging Nigerians not to pretend that everything was fine while families continued to struggle with the cost of healthcare.
